Ever worked with Adobe Illustrator color swatches? According to this help page, Swatches are named colors, tints, gradients, and patterns. The swatches associated with a document appear in the Swatches panel. Swatches can appear individually or in groups.

The polka dot background for the celebrity kitchens feature was made by first selecting a swatch. Choose the best swatch, any swatch. The next step was to use the shape tool to draw out a rectangle.
